Thursday 3rd March
The sun and heat have returned so we have had 2 very warm days. Yesterday Ben started off the day with some fishing from the beach but yet again not even a bite! I walked along the beach whilst he was fishing. We played golf at Oyster Reach in the afternoon, which, as soon as we started, I remembered was my favourite course here. The course is interesting with some holes with water and the signature hole with a view of the coast and Parris Island (training centre for the US marines). We played on our own as the golf company we had booked through had entered us as a 4 ball in error.
We played the same course again today with not so much success for me. Today we were joined by an 85-year-old father with his 57-year-old son; the father was from Cleveland Ohio and the son now lived in Charlotte in North Carolina. They were very good company and we ended up having a drink with them in the bar afterwards where they were very keen to learn our views about Europe and the UK in general. The son was interested in History and had studied UK history in depth.
When we came to the signature par 3 6th hole, Ben, as ever up for the challenge, parted with $20 to support the US military veterans with the reward of getting a sleeve of 'chaos' balls and a voucher for $20 to spend in the Pro Shop if he hit and stayed on the the green; if he had got a hole in one, he would have won $500 but little chance of that! Ben excelled and remarkably managed to hit and stay on the green (160 yds). He has subsequently bought a snazzy golf towel emblazoned with the Oyster Reef logo. It is perhaps worth mentioning here that I had driven the green the day before but as it was late in the day there was no opportunity for me to enter that challenge - I will leave it to your imagination if I would have risked my money!
We have self-catered in the Condo for the last 2 nights.
