The Journey






The Thursday taxi to Heathrow worked well and we arrived with 3 hours to spare. The check-in was excellent, and we were settling into the business lounge within 40 minutes. The flight was comfortable, departing slightly late as it had to wait for passengers from a connecting flight. Onboard the Boeing 777 we were again well looked in our comfortable business class 'pods'.

We were astonished how quickly we got through Atlanta immigration.  There were no forms to fill in - a few questions about where we were going to stay and that was it. By the time we got to the luggage carrousel our luggage was appearing. Once we got outside it got a bit more difficult. We had to change terminals (shuttle bus) and then wait for the hotel shuttle bus. This turned out to be useless and we eventually got a taxi to the hotel - cost $40 for a trip round the airport perimeter! I complained to the hotel reception and in the morning the assistant manager apologised and has authorised a $40 credit to our account. The Comfort Inn, although basic lived up to its name and also provided a free breakfast in the morning.

We got the hotel shuttle back to the airport and then a short internal shuttle to the car rental centre. We had hired a car from Sixth which again was very straight forward. Once we had got our sat nav working, we departed the rental garage and, in the daylight, we could see a big chip in the windscreen, so we returned to the Sixth area. They were very good and quickly arranged us another car which is a virtually brand-new hybrid Toyota Venza. It is very comfortable with plenty of space for the golfclubs. We had an uneventful drive to Hilton Head with a break at MacDonald's (well we are in the USA) for a bite to eat. The Condo is roomy and comfortable with a communal pool and tennis court. We did a fairly big shop in Harriss Tweeter before a quick meal and a good night's sleep.


We have been for a 'constitutional' walk on the beach this morning and are playing golf this afternoon.

Yesterday was our coolest day to date. There was a strong cold wind and at one stage Ben put on his waterproof trousers and jacket, which he wears in the winter for golf in the UK. There were just the 2 of us playing with 3 men in front and 4 behind. We spent quite a lot of time waiting for the 3 in front of us, which was when we were coldest. The fairways were wide, and the wind was blowing down them. Ben just edged this match, but we were both glad to finish our round and go home to the central heating. Catching more than Ben!! In contrast, today was much warmer and whilst there was still a bit of a breeze, as long as we kept in the sun it was a lovely day. Thursday 3rd March

  The sun and heat have returned so we have had 2 very warm days. Yesterday Ben started off the day with some fishing from the beach but yet again not even a bite!  I walked along the beach whilst he was fishing. We played golf at Oyster Reach in the afternoon, which, as soon as we started, I remembered was my favourite course here. The course is interesting with some holes with water and the signature hole with a view of the coast and Parris Island (training centre for the US marines). We played on our own as the golf company we had booked through had entered us as a 4 ball in error.  We played the same course again today with not so much success for me. Today we were joined by an 85-year-old father with his 57-year-old son; the father was from Cleveland Ohio and the son now lived in Charlotte in North Carolina. Monday 7th March

We have had 2 very hot days with temperatures into the 80s. It was a little breezier today but still very warm. Post-game drink with Barbara Our golf seems to be highlighted now by who we play with. We find the Americans very interesting, and they are equally interested in all aspects of the UK. Yesterday we played with a 72-year-old lady on her own who was on holiday from near Boston. She had been married twice but she was now living on her own. She was eager to learn everything English ranging from Doc Martin to the Royal family and anything historical. Ben sent her a photo which someone took of the 3 of us and he received an email thanking him and saying how much she had enjoyed meeting us and playing golf with us. As far as the golf was concerned, she, Barbara, played reasonably well but Ben won the day. Today's golf partners were a father and son from Michigan.
