Tuesday 15th March

We have played our last 2 rounds of golf now and have one more day here before we start our journey home. A handy US Marine Corps bench The last 2 days have been warm and partly sunny, but the wind has been quite gusty. We have played on both days on our own despite the courses being busy. Yesterday we played at Shipyard where we were late starting because we had to wait for buggies to be returned. This has happened at 2 of the courses we have been at; not sure why they have a shortage of buggies. We were worried that we would not finish before dark as there was a very slow 4 ball ahead of us, but fortunately there was just enough daylight for us to finish. This year we had managed to get passes to play on the course on Parris Island which is the home of the US Marines. We had to apply for access on to the island before we left UK and just managed to squeeze today's golf in as the permit did not start until the 15th of March. It took a while for the gate guards to sort out our pape

Neptune We have had 2 cold days in a row. Yesterday there were 25mph + winds so we decided against golf.  Ben set off to go fishing but found it far too windy. I walked to the beach and the sand was blowing along the shore, so it was very unpleasant. We visited Shelter Cove Marina, but the cold wind got the better of us.   Liz decided on a bit of retail therapy which took over an hour in a lady's clothes shop - but no purchase. Ben sat in the car and listened to the radio!  We migrated to Coligny which is near the beach for a cup of coffee with a large cranberry muffin! Shelter Cove Marina Wall to wall sunshine - but cold Today, temperature wise it was much colder but there were clear blue skies. Last night the temperature was around freezing, and it only rose a few degrees during the day. We had booked to play golf which was reasonably pleasant in the sunshine but out of the sun and in the wind, it was bitterly cold. The golf was reasonable, it was slow to start with, but we paire

Sea view from Dolphin Head The weather has changed, and we are now experiencing cooler temperatures with some rain. Despite a forecast for thunder showers yesterday and today, we have managed to play golf both days. It is interesting to note that, having previously seen the golf courses crowded, when we went to play on both days there was hardly anyone there - too cold for the locals!! Yesterday's choice was to go and play again at Eagles Pointe. This transpired not to have been a good choice due to the course being low lying and having suffered from a lot of overnight rain. As a result, buggies were not allowed on the course, only on the path, and every shot we hit seemed to go on the far side of the fairway from the path. We did much more walking and when we reached our ball, we often didn't have the club we wanted. It was even more annoying when we saw the family ahead of us driving their buggies all over the fairways - the buggy master was on his way to give them a rollicki

Interesting par 3 hole Yesterday was the last day of our golf package. We ended it by playing with a very annoying lady golfer from near New York who talked nonstop all the way round the course. She and her husband were on their way back home after spending most of the winter in Florida but had stopped off for a week in Hilton Head. She distracted me from my golf and Ben was annoyed near the end when she kept driving her buggy in front of where he was about to hit his ball. Her 79-year-old husband walked for most of the course as he was trying to make sure he kept fit in his advancing years. He was a retired New York Wall Street trader. It was quite a relief when we finished, and they went off in another direction from us. It was getting foggy as we finished our round, and it seems as if the weather had broken as it rained heavily overnight and has been overcast but humid today. I think we have a couple of rainy days coming before it brightens up, but it is forecast to be cooler. Today

We have had 2 very hot days with temperatures into the 80s. It was a little breezier today but still very warm. Post-game drink with Barbara Our golf seems to be highlighted now by who we play with. We find the Americans very interesting, and they are equally interested in all aspects of the UK. Yesterday we played with a 72-year-old lady on her own who was on holiday from near Boston. She had been married twice but she was now living on her own. She was eager to learn everything English ranging from Doc Martin to the Royal family and anything historical. Ben sent her a photo which someone took of the 3 of us and he received an email thanking him and saying how much she had enjoyed meeting us and playing golf with us. As far as the golf was concerned, she, Barbara, played reasonably well but Ben won the day. Today's golf partners were a father and son from Michigan. The father was a consultant for business charities and also a rectal medical consultant. His son was a junior doctor

Yesterday was our coolest day to date. There was a strong cold wind and at one stage Ben put on his waterproof trousers and jacket, which he wears in the winter for golf in the UK. There were just the 2 of us playing with 3 men in front and 4 behind. We spent quite a lot of time waiting for the 3 in front of us, which was when we were coldest. The fairways were wide, and the wind was blowing down them. Ben just edged this match, but we were both glad to finish our round and go home to the central heating. Catching more than Ben!! In contrast, today was much warmer and whilst there was still a bit of a breeze, as long as we kept in the sun it was a lovely day. We played on the 'Robbers' Row course', which has some links with crime from a long time ago.  We were paired with a Canadian couple who were on holiday here. They were very pleasant company and I commented to Ben that it was about the first time we have played in America with a proper lady golfer. She was very good an

The sun and heat have returned so we have had 2 very warm days. Yesterday Ben started off the day with some fishing from the beach but yet again not even a bite!  I walked along the beach whilst he was fishing. We played golf at Oyster Reach in the afternoon, which, as soon as we started, I remembered was my favourite course here. The course is interesting with some holes with water and the signature hole with a view of the coast and Parris Island (training centre for the US marines). We played on our own as the golf company we had booked through had entered us as a 4 ball in error.  We played the same course again today with not so much success for me. Today we were joined by an 85-year-old father with his 57-year-old son; the father was from Cleveland Ohio and the son now lived in Charlotte in North Carolina. They were very good company and we ended up having a drink with them in the bar afterwards where they were very keen to learn our views about Europe and the UK in general. The
